12 Ways to Expand Yourself: Practice For Personal Growth

Expanding yourself comes in different shapes and sizes. There are various areas in your life for your to grow. For may people, this seems like a daunting task. The journey of personal growth is a life long journey. You keep making those optimal changes every single day.

Although there are so so many ways to expand yourself on your personal growth journey in life, but I have listed out 12 for your to get started:

Overcome your fears

When we are afraid, we don’t think clearly because our emotions take control of us. Leaders and successful people are not immune to fear. They work towards controlling and learning them. Never be the victim, you are in control of your life. Put yourself in a position to overcome those fears

Move towards the fear. When you identify fear and discipline yourself to move toward it, it grows smaller and more manageable. Face it head-on. It might be the fear of public speaking, or fear of taking action, or fear of success. Whatever it might be, name your fears and confront them. Naming your fears always takes some of the power out of them.

Level up your skill

We all have that innate skill that we can do with ease. Some people might call it talent. It is something that comes easy to us than other people. But, the problem is that we focus on skills we are not good at. We have been taught from a young age to focus on our weaknesses rather than our strengths

I want you to make this mindset change right now, and continue to repeat it to yourself every day. “I will focus on my strengths, not my weaknesses”. “I will focus on what I am good at, not what I am bad at”. Leveling up your skills expands you as a person and makes you more valuable to the world.

Get out of your comfort zone

This is something I have struggled with for a long time. And I’m aware that I am not the only one with that problem. We all have that bubble around us. Anything we do inside of it is “safe”. But when a situation demands us to get outside that bubble, everything in us begins to shake, we become hesitant.

One thing that I have realized is that when we come out of our comfort zone, we set a new standard for our comfort zone. It enlarges. The more we do it, the more our comfort zone enlarges. Here are some tips to helps you get out of your comfort zone

  • Keep on learning – It is essential to move out of your comfort zone and dive into the learning zone
  • Do everyday things differently – Make large or small changes to the daily habits you practice on a daily basis
  • Don’t give yourself time to think, take the decision right away – Trust yourself and avoid overthinking because this can lead to procrastination and you might end up not doing the thing
  • Become more curious
  • Celebrate small wins

Read a Book

This is something I’ve been doing since the beginning of 2021. I can’t overestimate or underestimate the importance of reading books. When reading, you learn more, explore different thinking approaches, generate ideas, expand yourself and motivate yourself to make other changes in your life. Although it requires focus, attention, and patience, it is worth it. You could also listen to audiobooks too.

Ask for feedback

The CEO of Tesla Elon Musk said “I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better. I think that’s the single best piece of advice – constantly think about how you could be doing things and better questioning yourself”

I probably listen to a man worth over $185 billion. Don’t be afraid to seek progress and constructive feedback from your teammates, family, friends, boss, or even clients. It is better to know that you are on the right track, rather than finding out at the end that you’ve gotten it wrong.

Feedback provides an opportunity to gain insights into what other people think about you or your actions. From there you will be able to make better choices which lead to growth

Listen to podcasts

Podcasts help us to become better listeners. We can learn new things in areas we are interested in. Adapting podcasts into your daily routine expands yourself. It could be a physical, emotional, social and interpersonal, creative, or self-improvement hobby. There are so many advantages of doing something new. Such as helping you to be more patient, increase your confidence and self-esteem, increase your knowledge and skill, challenge you, expand yourself and so many more.

Eat healthier

You are what you eat.

Our diets have a massive impact on who we are and the results we produce. When trying to eat healthier, start small. Switch only your breakfast for today, tomorrow you can make a home-cooked healthy meal, next week you can buy healthy snacks from the grocery store

Start with what you have and build up from there. Eat powerful foods that will make you stronger and increase your energy level each day.

Wake up early

If you haven’t developed the habit of waking up early, this is the right time to start. The benefits of waking up earlier outweigh the effort required to wake up early. There is a popular misconception about waking up early that it is difficult, or that I’m a night owl, not a morning person. However, there are so many research papers, articles, and studies on the benefits of waking up early.

There are so many studies that have proved the benefits of meditation. It is training your mind to focus redirecting your thoughts. A recent study found out that just a couple of weeks of meditation training helped people’s focus and memory during the verbal reasoning section of GRE. It has a lot of benefits for you. Practicing meditation is a sure way to expand yourself

Learn to deal with negative people

We’ve all been there, trying to reason with a difficult person. We get frustrated and angry at both the situation and the person. From Psychologytoday there are ways in which we can de-escalate those difficult situations. These tips may not feel natural to you, but practicing them will develop the mindset to take conscious proactive measures.

  1. Listen – Everyone wants to feel heard. Next time you are in that situation, listen with the aim to focus on what the other person is saying.
  2. Stay calm – In the heat of an argument, it is difficult to be calm. Staying calm is the best option you have for settling that conflict
  3. Don’t judge – Do not judge the other person. The person might just be feeling fear or the right to be heard.
  4. Do not act defensively – I know this is easier said than done. While the other person is saying things you don’t like or are not true. Be aware that the person is emotionally unstable at that moment.

Take Action

The distance between who you are right now and the person you want to become in Action. You can’t expand yourself by staying in the same position you are in. It is easy to be determined to expand yourself and even easier to say it, but it is harder to take the first step towards your self-improvement.

What is something you’ve been putting off. Or something you know you have to do and are not doing it. Go and do it. Taking action is the only way to get to where you want to go in life.

A dream becomes a goals when action is taken towards its achievement
